Hope Woods Celebration! @ Hope Woods

Come celebrate the protection of Hope Woods with us on Sunday, May 19th. Hope Woods is a beautiful gem in the heart of Kennebunk, located on Barnard Lane, just off of Rt. 1/Main Street. KLT is partnering with the Friends of Hope Cemetery & Woods and Hope Cemetery to  protect the 72 acre property  through a conservation easement. It reflects wonderful open space in the center of the village with about 2 miles of trails. Come check it out on Sunday, May 19th!

Visit us at the Kennebunk Farmer’s Market. We have a booth and want to engage with you! The Market is located in the Garden Street Municipal Lot in downtown Kennebunk, just off Main Street. For GPS users, enter “3 Wells Court” as the street address. Wells Court is directly across Main Street from the Waterhouse Center pavilion. Please see below for more detailed directions

From the South via Route 1:
1) Route 1 north to downtown Kennebunk
2) Cross the bridge
3) Straight through one traffic light
4) Turn left onto Wells Court
From the North via Route 1:
1) Route 1 south to downtown Kennebunk
2) Straight through two traffic lights

From North or South via Maine Turnpike:
1) Take Exit 25 (Kennebunk)
2) Left after the exit onto Route 35 south

Environmental Speaker Series: All About Bees @ A Place To Start

Join us on Wednesday, June 5th at 6:30pm for a presentation by the York County Bee Keepers Association. The York County Bee Keepers Association will discuss bee keeping and the importance of bees as pollinators. This event is sponsored by A Place To Start in partnership with the Kennebunk Land Trust. Naturalist Walk: Oxbow Preserve @ Oxbow Preserve

The Kennebunk Land Trust is hosting a naturalist walk on Saturday, June 15th from 10am-noon at the Oxbow Preserve in Kennebunk.  This 14 acre preserve provides scenic views of the Mousam River with over a mile of river frontage. The walk provides a great opportunity to learn more about animals and trees in a mixed confer forest. This is a rain or shine event so please wear appropriate clothing and footwear. Membership to the Kennebunk Land Trust allows these walks to be available at no charge. Please call 207-985-8734 for more details.

Directions: The Preserve is located on Spiller Drive off of Cat Mousam Road in Kennebunk. Parking is available at the trailhead.

Ice Cream Social

The Kennebunk Land Trust’s annual ice cream social is scheduled for Tuesday, August 6th at 5pm. The social will take place at Hope Woods, a 72 acre preserve protected by KLT through a conservation easement with the Hope Cemetery Corporation. Guided walks of the preserve will be available. Hope Woods is located on Barnard Lane, just off of Rt. 1 in Kennebunk. There is limited parking at the trail head. This program is free and open to the public, though donations to KLT are always welcome. This event is sponsored by Big Daddy’s Ice Cream in Wells. Rain date for this event is Wednesday, August 7th.

KLT Annual Meeting @ Brick Store Museum Program Center

The Kennebunk Land Trust is excited to announce that Judy Camuso, Commissioner of the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife (MDIFW) is the Trust’s guest speaker at its Annual Meeting. The Commissioner will discuss Maine’s wildlife with a focus on the department’s programs and resources such as citizen science projects, educational programs, landowner relations, outdoor partner program, and more. The event will be held on Wednesday, August 21st at the Brick Store Museum’s program Center, located at 4 Dane Street, Kennebunk, ME 04043. The program starts at 6pm with a brief KLT Annual Meeting followed by the Commissioner’s presentation at 6:15pm. Light refreshments will be available. This program is free and open to the public.

 

Judy Camuso became Commissioner of the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife in February, 2019, and became the first department employee to be named commissioner in over 30 years, as well as the first female commissioner of the department.

Judy was promoted from her position as the MDIFW director of the wildlife division, a position she held since 2013. She began her career in 2007 as an assistant regional wildlife biologist in southern Maine, and then was promoted to the special projects coordinator before being selected as director.

As Commissioner, she oversees over 300 employees whose job is to preserve, protect, and enhances the inland fisheries and wildlife resources of the state. The department is also responsible for promoting the safe enjoyment of Maine’s outdoors — from whitewater rafting to boating, snowmobiling, hunting, fishing, and wildlife observation.

The agency’s constituents include the fish, wildlife, and people who call Maine home, as well as

the visitors who call Maine Vacationland.

Guided Social Walk At Hope Woods

Join Us for A Guided Social Walk at Hope Woods, a 72 acre preserve protected through a conservation easement, on Wednesday, October 9th at 10am. This is a great opportunity to get outside and enjoy the start of Fall with old and new friends. The walk will be about a 1 mile loop and walked at an easy to moderate pace. This walk is hosted by: Kennebunk Land Trust, Kennebunk Parks & Rec, and Hope Cemetery. The walk is free and open to the public. Rain or shine. RSVP encouraged but not required.

Directions: Meet at the Hope Woods parking lot at 10am. The parking lot is located at the back of Hope Cemetery & Woods. Social Walk at Mousam River Wildlife Sanctuary

Join KLT for a social walk at Mousam River Wildlife Sanctuary, located on Water Street in Kennebunk. Off street parking is available on the left near the treatment plant, about 260 ft before the trailhead.

This program is a social walk hosted by the Kennebunk Land Trust and Kennebunk Parks & Recreation Dept. The aim of the walk is to foster connection among community members and introduce folks to the Kennebunk Land Trust’s preserves, which provide great places to walk and explore.

.There will be two guides for this walk so that walkers can go at their own pace. The Trust recently made several trail improvements to this preserve, including crib steps. The trail is about 1.5 miles (roundtrip).

This is a rain or shine event. RSVP is encouraged but not required. Please RSVP with either Ryan at the Kennebunk Recreation Dept. or Sarah at the Kennebunk Land Trust.We will meet on Water Street at the Mousam River Wildlife Sanctuary parking lot.

Maine Audubon Speaker Series: Backyard Birding @ Nonantum Resort

Join the Kennebunk Land Trust and Maine Audubon for KLT’s last Environmental Speaker Series program of the year. Maine Audubon will share details about “Backyard Birding.” Nick Lund, Maine Audubon’s Outreach & Network Manager, will discuss methods to transform your yard into an oasis for birds, with tips on how to safely and effectively feed and house your local birds.
The program will be held on Wednesday, November 20th at 5:30pm at the Nonantum Resort, located at 95 Ocean Ave, Kennebunkport, ME 04046. Cookies and refreshments will be available. There is no cost to attend this program, though donations are always welcome. RSVPs are encouraged but not required. To RSVP, please call the KLT office at 207-985-8734.
